Honestly, he was probably the top heel in the company for the latter half of the decade.
But he was a god awful singles babyface.

I think it was Alvarez who said that if you can't remember who the champion is, that means it's Edge. I would be inclined to name Orton as the slightly bigger heel of the years 2005-9 - given he was the last guy that people really thought might beat Taker at Mania, the guy who said that Eddie was in hell and the guy who punted Vince in the head. Orton was 'the guy' in a way that Edge never was, and he didn't rely on women to draw heat.
Truthfully Edge was originally a babyface project - the crowd turned on him and so they turned him heel, probably hoping that the crowd would cheer for him again eventually. Then the Lita thing blew up, and he was clearly staying a heel for the foreseeable and they worked with that. But a year later he was doing jobs for Flair and Piper, and he was transferred to the B show more or less permanently soon after that.

I'll remember Henry's reign. I'll remember Bryan's reign. I remember Cena's reign in 2007 quite well. But most are short and uneventful.

Guess you remember everything about Henry's run except who he beat for the title. ;)
Edge got more out of the MITB briefcases than he did the titles. Really, his first MITB case was probably worth more to his career than all 11 title runs combined.

IMPOSSIBRU to argue with, since his best run had Zombie as his music.

Second one was kind of a by-product of the Nexus being the main storyline, so it's forgettable - plus he won and lost the title in multimans.
The Rob Zombie music was definitely a big part of Edge's appeal as 'The Future of Smackdown'. I'm pretty sure he was originally supposed to go to RAW to feud with HHH - though I don't think HHH was ever that keen (and later apparently wanted Edge to be fired for the affair with Lita). If they'd had put him with JBL on Smackdown (and he hadn't porked Lita), then maybe he would have still worked out as a babyface. But he got lost in the shuffle and things went a different way.

The whole appeal of his character, to me, was how badly he was going to get screwed/fuck up and have to start all over again. Once he cashed in a NYR (as jaw dropping as it was) the hook was lost and he became another douchebag heel.
I can understand why people liked him but he was never more interesting than during his "paranoid/you're all out to get me" phase after coming back from injury.

I don't think he was ever that interesting again, although there is a lot of stuff he did after that I enjoyed.

The first 2/3 of the match were really good with Shawn mixing hate with a "Hey, I've still got the moves" attitude during his first flurry. Hunter's back work was pretty good too. I liked how he just started simple with a backbreaker that still got a huge reaction, then escalated from there. I could see not liking the last third which was just an HBK superman comeback with some high spots thrown in, but I don't know what else they were supposed to do. A low-key ending with HHH winning or Shawn skipping straight to the flash pin might have been "smarter" but definitely less satisfying for the story and the live crowd. Given that was the route they pretty much had to take, I think it was executed well enough. The ladder and table spots might look silly, but those are and always have been hate spots in WWE, so they fit perfectly. HHH gives Shawn a lot for the payoff. I think using the term "flash pin" to describe the finish is a bit disingenuous here since Michaels beat the shit out of HHH for nearly 10 minutes, and all HHH could muster at the end was a desperation counter. It wasn't so much a flash pin to give the face a cheap win, as much as it was just a quick little bait and switch during the finishing run. It didn't matter if Shawn hit the SCM there or not, HHH was dead anyway. The only problem I thought was HHH got up way too fast for the post-match beatdown.

I'm pretty sure Shawn/Razor is going to still be better than Bret/Yankem though.

Perfectly competent tag formula stuff. It didn't jump out at me as being anything special, but it wasn't bad at all.
