So there was talk about a new DC thread for the DCnU era.

So I went ahead and did it because I couldn't not make the joke.

So yeah, Justice League #1 is fun and stuff. Carry on.

So, Rich Johnson reviewed Justice League #1 and brought some really valid points with him:

...in that this is more Ultimate Spiderman #1 than anything else, and that series took off HUGE.

I really think the idea of the slow burn teambuilding combined with initial mutual distrust will do more for the casual reader than the hardcores. Which is actually a good thing. If they were just hoping to grab the existing fanbase here, they're being foolish.

I'm more worried about what'll happen when they time jump to the present.

The only real valid comparison between nuJL and USM, is that both were written to be read as a trade. USM started slow, but at least it told a story. JL fails at that. The only thing that moves the story along is a Superman splash page. The rest of the comic is rehashed egotistical bullshit with the new DC braintrust wanting to replace better origin stories with their own take.

OK, Flashpoint #5 sucked. Before that, Flashpoint sucked.

I wanna say up front I'm not a hater, 80% of what I buy is DC and likely 90% of what I buy this month will be DC. But I did not like Flashpoint, for a lot of the same reasons I didn't didn't like Blackest Night.

To start out NOTHING HAPPENED! Before we get to the ridiculous characters and their misuse, we must come face to face with the fact that nothing happened in this series. The first issue was a big talking scene, the second issue was Flash explaining things to Batman, third was freeing Superman who left immediately, fourth was... a gathering I guess, and now we get to issue 5.

Captain Marvel, who was the big bad dude of the last issue who would save the day, is gone, and later we read Billy is fuckin DEAD! Thawne (who's shown up for the first time) reveals himself to NOT BE THE VILLIAN and is basically just a spectator (didn't he get an action figure out of this?). Big useless splash page! They reference a plot from a story almost 2 years ago that hasn't been mentioned since. Thawne attacks Barry's legs over and over yet this doesn't lead to an obvious "I can't run!" point so now its just motion for him to talk over.

Thomas, who has no connection to Thawne, just kills him by page 9. So now the non-villian with an action figure is out of the picture. We return to the battle, whitch lady starts spewing magic, but wait! Grifter! And the Alliance! So important they need a double page spread! They fight for 2 panels and dissapear. (Also, I dipped out on the Resistance mini, but in the Outsider mini they revealed the guy in the black shirt was Jonn and Outsider killed him, why are they both present in this splash?)

Witch hurls magic at Flash, who can run at the speed of light, and he doesn't see it, so Thomas Wayne Batman has to jump in front of it, so he dies and gives Barry what you know will be a lame note.

At this point I had to put the book down and reread it to make sure this wasn't the shittiest book of the year. It was.

Superman shows up! The hanging plot from issue 3 is to be worth the wait! And here comes Wonder Woman and Aquaman, running side by side for some reason. Superman fights them for 2 panels and none are heard from again.

Gorilla Grodd shows up FOR NO REASON! Flash literally just mumbles "Grodd too?" Hes never seen again.

The world proceeds to crack in half under the weight of the Amazon's and Atlantean's doomsday weapons along with Obama's nonsense, . The world is CRACKING IN HALF! All we see is Barry on a cliff somewhere. Out of all the panels in this book, one couldn't be a cosmic shot of Earth cracking?

Barry goes to see his MOM! This is his MOTHER! The sky is perfect blue on the day the Earth cracks in half. He tells her the following: He is from an alternate timeline. In his timeline he is The Flash, a Superhero with the power of speed beyond all known measures. She is dead. He went back in time to stop her murder. This created a ripple that turned all of his Super Friends into villians.

OK, gotcha, the world is cracking in half by the way.

Now, listen to his mother's dialogue: "But you were drawn BACK to me when you started to break the time barrier. Like a lightning rod." Of course. "If you focus on YOURSELF, wouldn't you be drawn to the right time?" She's Michio Kaku in minutes.

He then knocks himself off the treadmill from when he initially saved his mom, which merges the timelines. The double page spread is utter crap with no real point and WHY IS GRIFTER WITH THE LEAGUE!?! He's got a gun right next to Batman for crying out loud!

Now we get to THE WORST PART OF THE WORST COMIC OF THE YEAR! Batman says that if he could travel through time he would've fixed his parents murder. 1. HE TRAVELS THROUGH TIME! Booster Gold, Darkseid beams, time hypnosis, general nonsense, Batman can time travel. 2. He's said over and over he would NOT bring his parents back to life.

So that's stupid.

The letter sucked, seriously, that's all The Batman has to say to his alternate timeline Batman son? Weak. And Bruce wouldn't cry.

Finally it has to be said, I can think of at least 3 minis that supposedly continued into Flashpoint #5 that straight up didn't (well, none of them really did)  but the biggest omissions are Abin Sur THE WHITE LANTERN! And Traci 13, both directly led to this comic and they didn't get one stupid panel in the background.

Am I missing something?

Justice League has been sitting on the table for hours now. Not looking forward to it.

I have no problems with the number one pick. I’m glad Dick Grayson becomes Batman was so high. I’m really surprised Bane breaking Batman’s back didn’t even make the countdown, that’s a big oversight. I wouldn’t have picked the ending to The Killing Joke. Instead I would have picked The Joker crippling Barbara Gordon from that book or The Joker trying to turn Commissioner Gordon insane because of The Joker’s belief that all it takes is one bad day to turn the sane insane.

That article lost me when they picked Animal Man 26 instead of #5 (Coyote Gospel) or #19 (breaking the fourth wall).

I would be tempted to say the climax of the Great Darkness Saga or the first JLA/JSA crossover should be #1.

I'm sure this has been mentioned already numerous times, but a big problem I have with this reboot is that "One Year Later" was pretty much the same thing. Yeah, it didn't restart the whole continuity, but it refreshed every title in an attempt to attract new fans and drum up publicity. DC is the Matt Hardy of the comic book industry.

I think number 1 is good enough, but The Killing Joke definitely should not be number 2 (I don't think it would make my list, actually.)

Obviously, my vote would have gone for Wally defeating The Professor.  With Wally coming back from the Speed Force for Linda also in my top ten.  And Kyle getting the ring.  And Linda Danvers turning down Matrix Supergirl's offer to re-merge with her, so she could instead help heal someone who needed it more.  And damn near every single former Birds Of Prey operative or friend showing up to escort Spy Hunter away from Babs forever, after Babs had kicked her obnoxious ass.  Tim Drake figuring out that Batman and Robin are Bruce Wayne and Dick Grayson.  Black Adam, Atom Smasher, and company liberating/conquering Kandaq.  Dick crying "Titans Together" to rally every living (non-evil) former and current Teen Titan against Dr. Light.  

I don't have a problem with their list, per se...  I mean, some of it I disagree with (Blackest Night?  REALLY?) but it's not bad.  I love that they included the Six's Last Stand...  It's just not the things that I personally loved about the DCU.  *shrug*

Probably the lightning bolt on Barry...  And does "Whatever Happened To The Man Of Tomorrow" count?  Either as pre-crisis, or even as actually being part of the old DCU?  Oh, "BURN" from "For The Man Who Has Everything" might make my list.  Formation of the NTT.

Whatever Happened is the last Pre-Crisis Superman story, so it counts.

Just because you're a youngster doesn't mean you don't have to have an appreciation for older stuff, right? :>

There are some Silver Age stories I would put on the list and those are from before I was born (technically).

You could put the story where Wally gets his uniform changed from the red one to the yellow one with the sunroof.

I would have also guessed the Titans issue with Wally's letter home would make your list.

I think the best part of Justice League #1 was discovering that Supergirl's new hooker boots were originally supposed to be Green Lantern's new hooker boots.  Hal you cad!

I wonder in terms of getting new fans if 26 bi-weekly titles wouldn't in the end work out better than 52 monthly titles. Are you really going be able to get people to remember to come back in a month to pick up the next issue?

I'm not sure I should be surprised that a comic company hasn't thought to set up some kind of notification system for readers, be it by text message, e-mail or Facebook, that alerts you on Monday that you have comics that you read coming out that week. I think it be a pretty simple and easy way to get people back into stores.

Does anyone know if the comics (or an interview promoting the relaunch) have given an explanation why Dick Grayson is back as Nightwing and relinquished the role of Batman to the original, Bruce Wayne? I can just imagine how the scene would take place.
