Holy shit, KHII gets THREE #1 votes and is only #10. That's insane.

Never got my ballot back, Kyle. Was busy the last couple of days.

Well, aside from democracy getting the order wrong on the GTA's, that was a great list. I couldn't quite explain putting Eternal Darkness at #1 on my list, but it's one of the only games I've liked enough to complete two (and a half) times. It just has so many neat touches, like bringing up a 'thank you for playing-continue the story in Eternal Darkness II!' screen as a sanity effect halfway through the game, or letting you dismember enemies about six years before Dead Space. And ultimately, all the other potential number 1s had flaws that annoyed me too much to give them the nod, like Wind Waker knocking out two dungeons and drawing the game out with a shitty Triforce scavenger hunt, or San Andreas being made back when Rockstar still didn't believe in mid mission saves.

On reflection, Fire Pro Returns was probably the most worthy choice, but I couldn't justify going that high for a game that I never actually technically play, simming matches being the only true and proper path. Amazed I was the top vote on that though, not to mention Mario Sunshine and Kart: Double Dash. Elsewhere in the poll, a lot of games that I'm a huge fan of, and would have voted for if I hadn't played them on PC (Psychonauts, KOTOR) and current gen consoles (Okami). What this poll has firmly reminded me though, is that at the risk of having to unweld Fire Pro from my PS2, I should really get hold of a copy of Shadow Of The Colossus.

Great to see Fire Pro Returns make the top 10. Kind of surprised San Andreas was as high as it was. Vice City was great, love the soundtrack. Seeing Paper Mario 2, Mario Sunshine, Smash Bros Melee, Monkey Ball, and Mario Kart Double Dash not far apart from each other makes me really miss a Gamecube and I feel the need to get one.

I gotta find my ballot to remember all the things I voted for that didnt make the countdown.

Eventually I will look at the full results again but I don't remember seeing Beyond Good & Evil which makes me sad. If I am right (and I didn't just miss it) that would easily be my highest voted game that didn't make the list.

I'm pretty sure I voted for Beyond Good And Evil. *Checks* Yep, number 21 on my list, which seems like a fair reflection when it's set against all the other games of this generation, but I'd have bumped it higher if I thought it'd miss out on the countdown. Looking back at my list, my highest rated game that didn't make it was Blood Omen 2, which I had at number 11. Don't know how well it would hold up now, but I fucking loved being able to use medieval peasants as moving health pickups, and most importantly, so importantly, being able to throw them off things. Seriously, I don't think there is any game mechanic I enjoy more. Half of my play time on Saints Row 2 so far has been taken up by throwing people from a height.

Okay - if you had it #21 and I had it #6 (found my ballot) - how the heck didn't it make the back end of the ballot?

By my shitty math - that should have given it 75 Points (assuming no one else voted for it) - that should have put it somewhere in the 70s.

Maybe that explains the missing #42

Looking back at the data, that is exactly right. Actually, Crazy Taxi should be #42 and Beyond Good and Evil should be #41. I'll make a post about it later today.

I'm pleased to see that Katamari and Disgaea both made the top 20. I love those games.

I'm a bit surprised, but pleased, that all 3 GTA games made the top 10.  I'm not sure there was a more influential series of games that generation.  The Gamecube also acquitted itself nicely for a console with a fairly tiny library.

After all of these polls I feel like this was the greatest gaming generation, with the 16-bit era not too far behind.  It feels like this era really hit the sweet spot between technology being powerful but still cheap enough to develop for that we saw some really strange, creative games that we probably wouldn't get today.  I think I'll be breaking out the PS2 tonight to replay some things.

One final request, Kyle: would it be possible for you to post the list of all 200-some games that got votes?  I'm curious to see what stuff didn't make the cut.  If it's difficult/time-consuming then forget about it.

I think the only miss that annoys me was probably Resident Evil 0. If you're tracking down Gamecube stuff that is one people should not miss. Mostly I had very few misses this go round, which doesn't surprise me because I probably played less overall in this era so my ballot has more of a greatest hits feel than some of my more obscure choices on earlier polls.

There were a lot of really good PS2 games on this list I just haven't played, starting with nothing bigger than Shadow of the Colossus.

Although I didn't submit a list for this countdown, bravo to this list. I'm actually glad Vice City was #1 as opposed to the 'usual suspects' at this point (ICO or Shadow of the Colossus or God Of War 2 or Halo 2 or take your pick).
I don't really see Ico or Colossus being usual suspects. Resi 4, Halo and God of War, along with GTA and MGS stuff, were the big favourites, I thought.

Surprised to see such residual love for Mario and Final Fantasy from this generation. Surprised, though they were high, at Disgaea games placing where they did. Thought the first could go top 10. Impressed I wasn't top vote for Monkey Ball. What a stylish, charming game that is.

Sure thing. These are all the games that got at least one vote, including the ones that made the cut, in no particular order:

I'm guessing Outlawstar was the top vote for Bully - I never played all the way through Bully so I didn't feel good voting for it. We had the same high vote # two games in a row though, so I know I should have been high vote for Tony Hawk 3. Not a big deal regardless!

throughsilver, one of the things I want the most that I've never even seen in person is this: http://www.flickr.co...aflo/281811403/ - it's basically the first game in Arcade form. And look, it even has a banana as a joystick! Super Monkey Ball series peaked with 2 and hasn't been as good since, but I still think the first game was nearly perfect - the simplicity of the game, the pinpoint control and the ever increasing challenge. And it actually sold a few Gamecube systems early on when I got four of my friends together to do some Monkey Boxing. More than Star Wars, they *had* to play more Monkey Ball.

We got similar tastes it seems, but I never played Bully, hence it never made my list at all.

Hey Kyle, did my vote for RE: CV X get lumped in with RE:CV, since gameplay wise, they're the same game, just with tweeks to the cutscene's?  I only voted for X because I liked the cutscenes better, and it played better on a PS2 controller as opposed to the DC one.

Bully was 12 out of 18 on my ballot so you had it one place higher that I did.
