Street Fighter II should be my #1 as well.

Some other good versions out there, but all derivative of that so it got my vote in the end, plus it really launched the whole thing.

Well fuck this place. It took 144 characters or less to kill all the buzz we'd built up in this thread. "We take pro wrestling seriously" sounds like code for Davey Richards vs. Davey Richards in a Davey Richards on a pole match. Inside a Steel Davey Richards.

Kyle I think you have my ballot confused with someone else's, because I had that at #9...

sorry to rain on the parade and all. As long as the actual totals are right it's pretty unimportant I suppose.

So it is. My bad, I will correct that momentarily.

Same for TMNT. Sorry. I must've been half asleep when I was compiling the info.

4. The Simpsons - 1991 - 133 points/7 votes - Highest vote - #1 - Downfall/Hail Sabin/Red is Dead - Publisher: Konami

Writeup courtesy of Wikipedia:

The Simpsons: The Arcade Game is an arcade game developed by Konami in 1991. It is a beat 'em up based on the cartoon series of the same name. The voice actors of the immediate family (Dan Castellaneta, Julie Kavner, Nancy Cartwright, and Yeardley Smith) provide voices for their respective characters. It uses the same engine and therefore has similar overall gameplay as the 1989 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles arcade game, also made by Konami.

After stealing a giant diamond from Springfield Jewelers for Mr. Burns, Waylon Smithers bumps into Homer Simpson, whose family is conveniently walking down the street. The encounter knocks the diamond out of Smithers' hand, and Maggie snatches it in her mouth (to replace the pacifier), prompting Smithers to kidnap Maggie (rather than just the diamond) and run off. The Simpsons must give chase, but hundreds of goons in matching suits stand in their way.

1. WWF Wrestlefest - 1991 - 150 points/8 votes - Highest vote - #1 - Shane/OutlawStar51 - Publisher: Technos

Writeup courtesy of GameFAQS:

WWF WrestleFest is a professional wrestling arcade game released by Technos in 1991, featuring stars of the World Wrestling Federation. The game is the sequel to WWF Superstars. The game was distributed by Technos in Japan and North America and by Tecmo in Europe and Australasia.

Like Superstars before it, the game features many of the trademark moves and taunts of the featured WWF Superstars. The game also allows the player to insert more credits into the machine to buy energy—a feature similar to one used in an earlier Technos release, The Combatribes.

Wrestlefest included a new Royal Rumble mode as well as four-player simultaneous play. There are also voice samples, including commentary and pre-match introductions by WWF ring announcer Mike McGuirk. The voiced cut scenes featuring Gene Okerlund from Superstars returned as well.

I think the one that surprises me is The Simpsons in the top 5. Good game, but I didn't vote for it at all. Enjoyed it the time or two I played it though.

Mentioned it to Kyle when I sent in my ballot and I'm actually curious...am I the only one who managed to make a full list without a single fighting game? I never got into them at all, and went into my ballot with the idea of ranking games by how many quarters/tokens I dropped into them back in the day over their relative "importance." And then, of course, a lot of the key fighters came after my arcade rat days, so I simply didn't play them at all.

Shane, I'm not much of a fighter guy either. I would seriously much rather play Soul Caliber 2 than anything else that placed on the list. Street Fighter 2 isn't bad or anything, but I never did like Mortal Kombat in any iteration. Killer Instinct was pretty good too, but I don't think it held up very well at all. I do love side-scrolling brawler type games like TMNT and The Simpsons though.

Here is my ballot - I bolded the ones that placed. I only ranked games I've spent a fair amount of time with in an arcade, and I ranked them by which cabinets I'd most like to own someday.
Spoiler

Not surprised that a bunch of mine didn't make it - I know a lot of people probably haven't even played a few of mine. That said, I cannot believe that Outrun and/or Dig Dug didn't end up on the list somewhere.

Not played enough arcade games to take part but I really liked The Simpsons which has great nostalgia value for me as it was one of two arcade games I played for the first time ever (the other was Spider-Man: Maximum Carnage which I'm surprised didn't make it...boo!)

I love Metal Slug, but holy god did it get difficult.
The obvious solution is to play it on MAME and jam in about 50,000 credits.

Or buy the Collection for like...$10.

Metal Slug 3 was the best of the series, easily.
I have them all on my PSP. Still difficult, no matter how many credits you have.

Emeralds, Dillinger Escape Plan, Skullflower,
First quarter 2010 songs, UFC 111, Ke$ha...

Thanks, man. I think a GOTY poll is doable after the 8-bit countdown is finished.

Speaking of which, you still have a few weeks to get a ballot together for the 8-bit poll. The more, the better!
