Full Version: Buying a record player

So it was decided that as a family gift that we are going to buy a record player for my dad. So as that I'm assuming there are plenty of people on here that are still using vinyl I was wondering if anyone could give me suggestions.

We're looking to spend no more than $200. I really don't think my dad is ever going buy a new piece of vinyl in his life, so it'll be mostly just used to play the classic records he already has. Being able to digitally record the albums would be a nice feature but in no way necessary. So anyone with suggestions or a jumping off point? Thanks.

Does he have a stereo system to plug it into or does he need a standalone unit of some sort (like the old timey-looking CD/tape/turntable all in one units, some of which I think include CD recorders)?

He has a stereo system so I was looking at getting one with a preamp so that he could plug it into it. That said there are some nice stand alone ones and there doesn't seem to be that much of a difference in price.

I bought an Ion Proflie Pro a couple weeks ago. It has a preamp. I haven't tried digitizing music from it yet, but it plays just fine. It also now comes with a dust cover (some of th older USB turntables didn't) It was 100 bucks at Bed Bath and Beyond, and you can use the 20% coupon to get it for $80 (assuming you have access to BBB and their ubiquitous coupons).

How important is having a turntable that supports 78rpms? A lot of players seem not to have it and it seems to be a pretty decent price changer.

Does he have 78s?

I have 78s, and swear by the format although I haven't bought a new 78 or new 78 needle in about four years.
If he does have a bunch of 78s it may be worth getting a seperate vintage player instead of having him change needles.
If he doesn't own any 78s, there is no need.

Big Lots has one of those retro-styled turntable/cd/stereo players for $60.
The turntable plays 33 1/3, 45, & 78 RPM.

Just wanted to thank everyone for their help, I ended up going with the Audio Technica Audio Technica AT-LP2D-USB.

Anybody have recommendations for a standalone that preferably looks sleek and modern and not old-timey? USB capabilities would be nice too.

I have a small record collection that I used to play on my parent's turntable, but I've moved out a long time ago and have never gotten around to buying one for myself. I'm basically a beginner, so I don't need something too fancy, but want something that's not going to end up dying in a couple years. Like the OP, I'm looking for something under $200.

I got a Audio Technica AT-LP2D-USB for my dad over Christmas and he likes it. The only thing I would say is that if you're willing to go a little over $200, you can get a ATLP120 which supports 78's. But from my looking over Christmas, Audo Technica seems the best bet for under 200, as most of the nice record players seem to be 300+.
