Just curious because I thought Rashida Jones had new show coming out next Fall.
From the "Upfronts" thread:

And a spring launch is planned for THE RULES FOR STARTING OVER (working title) (20th Century Fox Television), starring Craig Bierko and Rashida Jones in the Farrelly Brothers' comedic take on a group of 30-somethings trying to find true love the second time around.
So it rolls out in the Spring but I don't know if that means it starts filming later or if she would be under contract with Fox for this summer...but she would, I suppose, have to be gone soon after the season premiere if she shows up at all.

Before this topic dies off to make way for season four, I can't help but mention that I finally got around to seeing season two. Holy cow that was an amazing season. From the first episode you could tell they really found their groove. "The Dundies" was so odd yet so charming at the end. And I definitely preferred Michael from season two than three.
I am also amazed at how casting managed to find such great people for the Jim/Pam dynamic. Not only did they find two people that everyone can like or adore, but they play the characters really well. Watching season two in my eyes made the ending of season three that much more rewarding to see.
And I couldn't help but cringe a little watching "Booze Cruise" and "Casino Night". It makes me wish I caught this when it first aired on NBC. And the commentaries are generally pretty good.

FYI, the Office's season 2 set will be $28 at Target next week. The Target version has a video blog extra shot by Jenna Fischer, and that's a pretty good price for it, although I'm thinking about waiting until an S2/S3 bundle is released since June has a couple of other big DVD releases that I want.

In t.v., committing to a stupid plot twist to preserve a formula is like ripping off a bandage. Yeah, you'll wince when it's happening, but a few weeks later no one will remember...it'll just be back to business as usual.
I'm not saying it would have been a good idea, or that easy...but allowing them to get together and then trying to keep conflict in the show without turning one of them heel is a lot harder to pull off over the long term than coming up with some ridiculous barrier to keep them apart for six or twelve more episodes.
Jim's relationship with Karen ended rather quickly and with no on-screen conflict at all. They could have strung that out at least for the first part of season four. They could also have put off the promotion to New York storyline and held that over them...maybe making them reticent to start up a relationship at least for the first month.
Bearing in mind that while this storyline is ancillary (and even a nuisance) to most fans of the show on this board...it's really the central element to a lot of the people that the network seems to feel are making the show a success. So pushing forward against the inertia of comfortable formula was quite brave.

I guess I should clarify. I'm well aware of the pains taken to avoid paying off big storylines throughout the history of television (largely sitcoms). What I guess I'm really saying is that I can't fathom it being done effectively in this case, with all characters involved maintaining their integrity. I look at The Office as a show that wouldn't trade that strength of character for one more season of chasing the Ross and Rachel dynamic.

you know realistically having jim and pam in a relationship on the show isn't too different than aspects of the relationship Jim and Pam had before. When there were scenes of them hanging out and pulling pranks most of the time the fact that Pam was dating someone was never brought out into the front; we knew she was engaged but there wasn't too many occasions in which her engagement to roy was apparent (with the exceptions of when Roy was on the show of course).
Also the Karen part is interesting; they're all going to have to be in the same room, so there would be a tension. I think as a whole this show has a better chance than most of avoiding the "ross and rachel" or "niles and daphnie" type thing.

and yet, underneath it all we knew they weren't happy...which is what kept it interesting. Happy relationships make for crappy television and the unfulfilled desire they felt was always one of the best metaphors on the show for workaday life in general...knowing there is something better out there but not being willing/able to pursue it. In fact, I think the U.S. version has made the office itself such a cosy little place (even Dwight is basically a babyface now) that they need this tension more than the UK version did.
I can't see these two characters (the two "normals" or...you know Alex Reagers...) being happy for long without killing any tension left in the show. None of the other characters are capable of producing the same level of empathy/regret/hope in the audience. At the same time, I can't see them turning the audience on either of them. So how do you break them up and keep them on the show without turning on one or both of them?
It would worry the bebuddha if I had to write it....s'all I'm saying.

Aug 10 2007, 12:06 AM
If they ever decide to break them up maybe Pam gets shitfaced drunk somehow and sleeps with someone else. Isn't she someone that gets drunk fairly easily? That's really the only way I see that working is by having something that makes one of them not in full control of themselves. It would be hard to pull off, but for now one it's an idea I can kind of see happening.
When's the season supposed to start anyway? I'm getting kind of anxious.

You know, I was once in a situation not entirely unlike the show. I was the goofy guy who didn't really fit in with the overall office vibe, she was the admin assistant. We flirted with each other for a long time, pulled pranks on co-workers. Eventually, I got the nerve to ask her out. We dated for a while, but the chemistry just didn't translate at all. What was so natural as a flirtatious friendship didn't work at a romantic level. She ended up moving not too long afterwards so we never had the awkward deal afterwards.
I can see them doing something like that for a while. Maybe it all works out in the end. They could run something like that for a while.
I'm one of those who is a big fan of the Jim-Pam storyline. The side stories and characters are what truly sets the show apart (although I think the Creed hype here is a little much), but I'd watch if it were just the Jim-Pam characters (and the writers) in an otherwise cliche sitcom office.

I don't know. I think even that would damage the character pretty greatly. The show is lighter than that, which I'm totally in favor of. I can't see them going that route with such an essential character.

As a huge 'Vice fan, I fully support him doing that. That reminds me of Dwight and Michael dressing like Crockett in the '80s day that was referenced in one episode.
The summer vacation video rules. Pam's "The new Pam is letting her hair down. I've been saying that for a while, but never actually did it. So Jim called me a hypocrite, and viola!".
