Awesome list, especially with the 1992 War Games coming out at number one. I still think that's the best War Games ever. I was one of the four who gave it a first place vote. Wasn't that Vampiro/Mike Awesome match at the end the one where a fan runs into the ring? Wasn't it also Vamp's last match in WCW? I just remember how bad I thought it was. I didn't vote for it or watch it but it sounds like one of those "so bad, it's so good" matches which probably explains why the Chambers of Horrors match also made it which I also didn't vote for. --- There were a lot of matches I hadn’t seen before as WCW didn’t have the presence the WWF/E does on UK TV. WCW in the UK pretty much consisted of Nitro/Thunder and the odd PPV from 1990/1991 as well as the odd PPV from 1999/2001 released on video. In that respect taking part in this poll was harder than the Greatest WWF/E matches one as I knew for the most part what was good and wasn’t. My best finds would be as follows: #15. King of Cable Finals: Sting vs. Vader - Starrcade 12/28/92 (1349 points, 18 votes, 1 third-place vote) The best Sting/Vader match. I liked Vader making two mistakes and chastising himself for doing so on covers and Sting’s rope a dope strategy. #16. Iron Man Match: Rick Rude vs. Ricky Steamboat - Beach Blast 6/20/92 (1316 points, 16 votes, 1 first-place vote, 1 second-place vote) I ranked this high but with hindsight I should ranked it higher. Awesome match from selling to the pacing. #25. Steven Regal vs. Larry Zbyszko - Saturday Night 5/28/94 (1064 points, 14 votes, 1 first-place vote) I don’t know how to describe this other than recommending it. Real and intense. #26. Dustin Rhodes vs. Vader - Clash of the Champions XXIX 11/16/94 (1062 points, 15 votes) Vader at his bullying best “C’mon boy, this ain’t no tea party” and Rhodes never giving up. #29. Dean Malenko vs. Ultimo Dragon - Starrcade 12/29/96 (1000 points, 16 votes) I prefer this to Mysterio/Psicosis from the same year. The best opening match to a WCW PPV ever. #40. The Boss vs. Vader - Spring Stampede 4/17/94 (808 points, 12 votes, 1 third-place vote) Two big guys beating the ever loving shit out of each other. #41. Submit or Surrender Match: Cactus Jack vs. Sting - Worldwide 11/9/91 (793 points, 13 votes) Biggest discovery of the poll for me. I think it’s one of the best matches either man have ever had. I also think it’s much better than the Beach Blast 1992 match. #52. Diamond Dallas Page vs. Sting - Nitro 4/26/99 (539 points, 10 votes) The best Crow Sting match by far, the best WCW World Title match of 1999 and possibly the best World Title match from the big three that given year. Performed a lot better than I thought it would and I’m glad it did. #76. Steve Austin vs. Ricky Steamboat - Clash of the Champions XXVIII 8/28/94 (350 points, 6 votes) These two worked so well together and this was the best match of the feud from two of my favourite wrestlers ever. #81. Fit Finlay vs. Steven Regal - Saturday Night 4/13/96 (338 points, 5 votes) Agree with ditch. One of the best under five minute matches I have ever seen. #123. Chris Benoit vs. Eddy Guerrero - Nitro 10/20/97 (181 points, 4 votes) This is also one of the best under five minute matches I have seen and my favourite Benoit/Guerrero WCW match. -------------------- ![]() |

And yes it's pretty bad, wonder why it ended up on the list. Surprised it hasn't ended up on a Botchamania yet, Awesome and especially Vampiro blow spots left right and centre. Vampiro even picked up a concussion from the finish. It was on a Botchamania already, it is the one with the brawl in the crowd and the shitty moves, right? -------------------- tioneB

#15. Couldn't agree more, it's my favourite of all their bouts too. Sting's selling of Vader's punches is superb, as is the point where you realise he's trying the rope-a-dope. The shots are staggering him but he's not falling. Must check this one out sometime. The non-PPV matches are often the ones that 'fall through the cracks' the most. Which leads on to... I adore this one, plain and simple. They also had a very good match the year before but I think this one trumps it. I still don't think Sting has had a better match since either, the only one to get within touching distance is Sting-Angle BFG '07. Sting and DDP going at it for 20 minutes of great back-and-forth action is a great example of the best of WCW. Sting losing the belt just 90 minutes later in a sloppy battle royale is a great example of the worst. It was on a Botchamania already, it is the one with the brawl in the crowd and the shitty moves, right? Ah, maybe I missed it. I haven't seen most of the recent ones I admit. Your description sounds about right ;) |

Really great to know of others who think it's the best. Seems to be a small minority who do. I don't get the love for the Strap match. I voted for it but I think TGAB 1992 match is better and the Starrcade 1992 match is the best. #41. Submit or Surrender Match: Cactus Jack vs. Sting - Worldwide 11/9/91 (793 points, 13 votes) Biggest discovery of the poll for me. I think it’s one of the best matches either man have ever had. Hope you get to see it. I tried to think of a phrase for ages saying just that and failing to do. Thanks! If you like Benoit and/or Regal, the TV match I and ditch discussed is a must watch. #52. I agree Sting hasn't had a match which comes close to this. I think this is DDP's second best match after his match with Goldberg at Halloween Havoc 1998. I try to forget everything post battle royale with the exception of Hart vs. Benoit and Steiner vs. Goldberg. -------------------- ![]() |

#23. Lex Luger/Sting vs. Rick Steiner/Scott Steiner - Superbrawl 5/19/91 (1074 points, 15 votes)
Rewatched this recently for the first time in a looooong time and I'd have zero problem putting it in my top five WCW/NWA matches of all time. Glad it did well here. It was basically WCW's version of Hogan vs. Warrior ... as SUPER GOOD GUY match, but with tons of cool moves thrown all over the place, as Luger and Sting just agreed to bump like madmen for the Steiner's cool throws/suplexes. And Scotty and Rick bump like crazy for lariats, hotshots etc.... All the while, the crowd is one of the hottest in WCW history, totally marking out for what they are watching with Ohhhhs and Ahhhhhs the whole match. I even really dug the Nikita ending too. Scott's Tiger Driver on Sting was epic. -------------------- ![]() |

Really brought back alot of cool memories going down the list thinking of matches I've seen, as I've seen probably 90% of that list. #68. Falls Count Anywhere Match: Diamond Dallas Page vs. Randy Savage - Great American Bash 6/15/97 (381 points, 8 votes) THIS is a great, little-talked about match. Really well put together and done at the peak of Page's popularity. Macho definately showed up to fight in this match too. Kudos to Mach as well, as he was always the one NWO guy who seemingly had ZERO problems putting people over. -------------------- ![]() |

The Savage v. Page series is awesome. It's kind of sad really because if you put the best elements from each individual match together you'd have a legit MOTD contender for WCW, but each match is just flawed enough on it's own where people remember the bad over the good if they remember anything at all. I like the Halloween Havoc match the best of the bunch myself even with the shit finish.
I thought Steiners v. Luger/Sting was probably one of the single most overrated matches in the poll so I don't agree with Rob there. Part of the reason I feel like that is that I don't think it was the best example of Warrior v. Hogan, nor do I feel like it was the best Steiners MOVEZ exhibition. That Steiners tag v. Fujinami and Illuzika was an incredible exihbition of insane shit that smoked it and I thought Luger v. Sting itself from Superbrawl 92 was a really awesome Warrior v. Hogan style match and moment for WCW during that period. -------------------- |

Yeah, I didn't really like that Steiners vs. Luger/Sting match. The crowd was definitely hot for it, and all four men in turn really wanted to keep the crowd hot ... but they were tossing each other around recklessly and looked so sloppy.

This was around the time I soured on the Steiners. Was this before or after they potatoed the Japanese guy? I remember being one of those people happy for their feud with Doc and Gordy, so someone could finally give them some receipts for their carelessness in the ring. -------------------- Mark Coale

I'm surprised at how many of these I haven't seen, since I've followed WCW pretty extensively from the start and have continued collecting the shows long since the company died. I'm also surprised that I've never managed to see the '94 WarGames match, as it's probably my favorite gimmick match out there. Could have sworn that I've seen the show, but I have no recollection of the main event at all.
Great list, though. It's really making me want to watch a big batch of this stuff tonight. -------------------- |

Others have mentioned some of their favorites and I"m too lazy at the moment to go deeply into it, but Brad Armstrong v. Vader is a fucking awesome 4 minute match that only I voted for, Steamboat v. Vader from Saturday Night 94 is an awesome hate filled showing from Steamer that only I voted for, Tommy Rich/Ricky Morton v. Midnights from Halloween Havoc 90 is a tremendous match with some of the craziest double team and hope spots you'll ever see, and Pillman v. Rude and Pillman v. Douglas are both incredibly awesome matches, with Pillman v. Douglas being worked in a unique way (it's a much better match than any of the Blondes v. Steamer/Douglas tags).
Also - though I didn't vote for it- Mike Enos v. Chris Benoit from Souled Out 99 is a helluva match. -------------------- |

#189. Rip Rogers vs. Terry Taylor - World Championship Wrestling 11/24/90 (100 points, 1 vote, 1 first-place vote) What's the story behind this match? No one knows besides Resident Evil. He voted it number one for whatever reason and did little to promote it as a quality match or even a match worth seeking out during the months and months (over a year) of nominating/pimping that went on over there. I don't begrudge him for his vote, but I really would have liked to see the match. -------------------- |

So, I recall enjoying the Booker T/Jeff Jarrett lights out match that ended with the ringpost figure four, but I haven't seen it since it aired. It's not on the list.
Was it just not good enough to justify my fond memory? Was it too short to stick in people's minds? Was it because it was in 2000 on Thunder? Was it because Jarrett was involved? |

Blimey Mookieghana, you are the stat man!
LooseCannon, do you know what date that match was on? Or at least, which month? I don't remember it and I'd like to find out more. |
